Oh my! Lucy, you have dialed in to my deepest fears.

In two weeks I will be back in my Portuguese village for the first time since my knee surgery in June. Now I am weaning off the crutches and it’s going well, but I am still abysmally slow and careful because the new knee is still learning to walk.

Aaargh! I'm an American, so I would have said after the second attempt to hand me the coin baggy, "Do I look like a fucking indigent? Thank you, no!" I wish I could say I would have not said it and wished I had, but sadly, I would have. In whatever language. This is exactly what Paulo Freire talks about in Pedagogy of the Oppressed: the elite need the oppressed to make them feel good. Even if their target is obviously not oppressed, actually.
